In July 2007, ‘We Love…’ will release the second in their compilation series ‘We Love Space Sundays, 08’ this time mixed by Balearic Ibiza legend Alfredo and one of the UK’s most in demand electronic selectors, Paul Woolford.
We Love: “Alfredo has been a hero of ours - the Northern We Love... massive - since time immoral, or at least since we first heard of his sets at Amnesia in the mid 80's. It has been a great pleasure of ours to finally get him on board as resident and a dream come true to have him represent for us on our second cd outing....A true Balearic original. Paul Woolford has made some of the finest electronic dancefloor tracks of the past few years in our eyes, and is, we feel, very representative of the new Balearic sound of Ibiza; pulsing tech infused house music, all night long.”
Alfredo, born in Argentina, lived in his Native town of Rosario until 23. In 1976, he immigrated to Spain and a few months later, arrived to the island that would shape the rest of his life – Ibiza. In 1982, after his son was born and he tried various job roles including that of a fashion designer and a candle maker, he decided to become a DJ. His first main set came at Amnesia, which went on to become a residency and one of the most infamous collaborations Ibiza has seen… Anyone who went to Ibiza in the late 80s will always remember an Alfredo set and the experience it invoked; carefree fun in the sun; glasses on, dancing in the sunny open air terrace listening to anything from salsa to rock and roll, Bob Marley as Luccio, Madonna or Tears for Fears… And dancing next to Grace Jones, George Michael or Boy George, perhaps.
By the end of the 80s, Alfredo began playing outside of Ibiza, including Europe, Singapore, Japan, South America and more. It was also around this time that the first strains of Chicago and Detroit House were filtering through to be combined with the newest German techno from the likes of Kraftwerk and Nitzer Ebbe. By 1988, the crowd had converted into a multitude and Alfredo was hailed as a phenomenon amongst music lovers and club goers around the world. In 1990, Alfredo moved to Pacha, bringing a modern, fresh touch to the club for three years. In 1994, Alfredo moved to Manumission, where he still regularly plays today. Into 2008, and after he has played regularly for We Love the past four years, he is not only a weekly resident – playing a mixture of the Sunset Terraza and El Salon sets every week this coming summer, but he is also mixing We Love’s second compilation, alongside Paul Woolford.
Paul Woolford has established himself as one of the most original DJ/producer/remixers that house music has exposed in recent times. Paul’s first visit to Dave Beer’s infamous Back To Basics sealed his fate in many ways, being as it was the place where he heard so many of the records in his own collection in the full club context, which felt to Paul like jigsaw pieces falling into place. “I remember clearly the first time I walked in, I think I was only 17; the only way to describe it was bedlam. And the overriding thought was ‘I’ve got to play in here one day’”. After spending his youth collecting equipment and teaching himself how to produce, initial releases were made, but the real breakthrough came with the Bobby Peru project for 20/20 Vision, and in February 2000, the release of the LP ‘Death Of A Player’. This put Paul firmly on the map with both the dance music media and with a far wider range of DJs, simultaneously provoking a huge amount of label interest and remix work. 2005 was a turning point in Paul’s already enviable career. He embarked on his residency for We Love… Sundays at Space in Ibiza, produced key remixes for Underworld, Freeform Five & DK7 for Trevor Jackson's Output label, recorded a modern day classic in the form of ‘Erotic Discourse’ and saw his global DJing schedule rocket; extensive touring of America, Australia and Europe became the norm and Paul's residency at We Love... became weekly in 2006 which further pushed things forward.
2007 bought the completion of the second Bobby Peru album ‘The Truth’ for 20/20 Vision, the launch of his label Intimacy, for more experimental releases (with graphic design by Trevor Jackson), and alongside grueling touring and key gigs at the Exit Festival, Rennaissance' Wild In The Country festival, Sub Club in Glasgow and Panorama in Berlin as well, as his second year as resident at We Love.
And into 2008, Paul Woolford is again weekly resident for We Love and is mixing We Love’s second compilation release, alongside the legend that is Alfredo.
‘We Love Space Sundays, 08’ mixed by Alfredo and Paul Woolford is released July on Ministry of Sound.
Alfredo will play every Sunday from June 15th – September 23rd.
